Who says beauty is only for the ladies? The men’s grooming industry has leveled up its game in recent years, proving that guys can rule the self-care scene too. From using a singular product for cleansing the face, beard, and body, to following a three-step skincare routine, men spend way more time and energy on looking after their skin now than before. Korean skincare, also known as K-beauty, is here to offer yet another upgrade to the skincare routines of both men and women. Remember the hype around glass skin? The Korean trend is a product of following the multi-step skincare routine advised in K-beauty. “The beauty of Korean skincare is that it is a carefully curated skincare routine with 10 or more steps. It focuses on layering products on the skin from the lightest to the heaviest. K-beauty’s philosophy also relies upon prevention and protection, rather than undoing damage, says Dr. Manasi Shirolikar, Consultant Dermatologist and Founder of drmanasiskin.com, which is an Online Consulting Brand.
A closer look at K-beauty
K-beauty is not a trend—it’s a way of life. You can’t possibly get the most out of Korean skincare without making certain lifestyle changes. For one, you need to set aside 20 minutes in the morning or evening to follow the 10-step skincare routine. “Korean skincare typically involves a multi-step routine that consists of several products for cleansing, toning, applying essences, serums, moisturisers, and sunscreen. The approach allows for thorough cleansing, hydration, and targeted treatment of various skin concerns,” explains Dr. Kiran Sethi Skin Expert, Author, and Founder at Isya. It is advised to practise K-beauty 3-4 times a week
Korean skincare tips to incorporate into your daily routine
We understand that following a step skincare routine daily or even a few times a week can be difficult. It’s also not necessarily required for every skin type. “As Indian skin is naturally different from Korean skin, it’s best to adapt some of their steps to your routine as you see fit. Indian skin tends to have more pores and is oilier in nature. Therefore, too many layers of products will not benefit you,” explains Dr. Sethi. We spoke to both the experts to highlight some best practices from K-beauty that you can add to your skincare routine.
1. Cleanse daily
We can’t stress the importance of a gentle cleanser enough. If you take away anything from Korean skincare, let it be this: “Start with a gentle cleanser to remove dirt, oil, and impurities from the skin. Consider using a foam cleanser or a low-pH cleanser suitable for your skin type,” recommends Dr. Sethi.
2. Exfoliate weekly
According to Dr. Sethi, regular exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells and promote a smoother complexion. “Use a gentle exfoliator 1-2 times a week to prevent clogged pores and improve skin texture,” she says.
3. Invest in a facial essence
Not to be confused with a face serum or tone, a facial essence is a K-beauty gem that enhances your skincare routine greatly. “It enables better absorption of products into the skin, as it prepares the skin to soak in your serums and moisturisers more effectively. It also protects the skin’s barrier, rebalances the skin’s pH levels, and soothes the skin,” says Dr. Shirolikar.
4. Apply an overnight sleeping mask
According to Dr. Shirolikar, the skin cell turnover process is on the higher side at night, when you sleep. “An overnight sleeping mask will provide deep hydration and aid in the skin’s repair, thus making you wake up with fresher-looking skin,” she explains.
5. Use sheet masks
A weekly sheet mask is not only great for your skin, but it’s also a wonderful way to unwind. “Consider using sheet masks once or twice a week for an extra boost of hydration and targeted treatment. Choose masks that address your specific skin concerns,” suggests Dr. Sethi.
6. Use SPF all year round
In K-beauty, you absolutely cannot skip sun protection or take it lightly, no matter what the weather is like outside. “Using a high factor, broad-spectrum sunscreen will prevent a lot of issues like ageing, tanning, and even skin cancer,” says Dr. Shirolikar.
7. Don’t ignore eye care
Struggling to hide dark circles after a late night? “Incorporate an eye cream or serum to address concerns like dark circles or fine lines around the eyes. Gently pat the product around the eye area using your ring finger,” explains Dr. Sethi
